[Thanks to the rain, Alex has been laying low at home today. Rain was bittersweet nowadays. Every once in a while, she caught herself thinking about Mason when it rained. After all, standing in the rain on Waverly Place was the first time she'd shared a kiss with her werewolf boyfriend.

[Thanks to her PCD, she can be seen sitting in the windowsill of her room, pointing her wand outside. She's filling invisible magic bubbles with rain water and letting them drop. Onto the pavement, onto small creatures, and perhaps onto you! One of her favorite things to do with Mason was throw water balloons at unsuspecting victims who happened to be wandering down Waverly Place. Oh, what fun!]

Hnhnheheheh! That was a good one.

[Have yo been hit with a water bubble? Feel free to yell at this young whipper snapper.]

No, this is... between wizards. Dark wizards are gaining power and support again. But in these conflicts, Muggles can often be... [deep breath]... casualties.

Dark wizards... like evil.

Huh. There are just selfish wizards where I come from. Although I did have a friend who wanted to do away with the wizard competitions for good.

Very much so. Wizards who will stop at nothing to gain power, with no regard to who stands in their way. ... It happened fourteen years ago, and now it's happening again.

That sucks.
Sorry you guys have to go through that.

It's all right. We just... have to work to find a way to defeat them this time.

But... why is it your problem?
Aren't there any older wizards to take care of that?

Certainly. There's an entire organization dedicated to fighting these wizards. But if we do our part as well, it can only help.

So, what are you guys doing to help out?

It might not be much, but for now, I have convinced my best friend to teach other students proper defensive spells.

That... definitely sounds like a good idea, especially around here.

I have to admit, I'm not quite as skilled at this as Harry is... but I suppose I could, if you wanted me to. What would you like to learn?

Well, I met this really mean dude a while back. I think he's also a wizard. He knows some pretty nasty tricks.

Got anything to fend off mean wizards? I don't think he's actually evil, but, you know. Just to be on the safe side.
[If she'd known any better, she might think to mention the name of this mean wizard.]

[A pause; she's considering.]

... Well, regardless, I suppose we could start with a shield charm. That can fend off a good number of spells.

Cool! How does that one go?

[She raises her wand, almost importantly. (Don't mind her.)]

Protego!

[A light emits from her wand, an almost transparent blue.]

[Alex watches the light, making a mental note of the incantation. It sounds easy enough.]

[Hermione lowers her wand, looks over at Alex, and smiles.]

All right, you try it now.

[Alex does the same thing, lifting her wand and reciting the incantation.]

Protego.

[As the same blue light emits from Alex's wand, Hermione smiles encouragingly.]

Very good. I find it's quite a useful spell.

[Alex smiles, proud of herself.]

So, is it like, a forcefield or something?

In a sense. It will deflect a good number of spells. ... Although it won't protect you against the more serious ones.

Ah, a deflector. Nice!

What are the more serious spells like?

They're... awful. There are three in particular, ones we call the Unforgivable Curses. Casting one of them would earn you a life sentence in Azkaban. ... With good reason.
