Keeping Occupied [Video/Offline]

[Thanks to the rain, Alex has been laying low at home today. Rain was bittersweet nowadays. Every once in a while, she caught herself thinking about Mason when it rained. After all, standing in the rain on Waverly Place was the first time she'd shared a kiss with her werewolf boyfriend.

[Thanks to her PCD, she can be seen sitting in the windowsill of her room, pointing her wand outside. She's filling invisible magic bubbles with rain water and letting them drop. Onto the pavement, onto small creatures, and perhaps onto you! One of her favorite things to do with Mason was throw water balloons at unsuspecting victims who happened to be wandering down Waverly Place. Oh, what fun!]

Hnhnheheheh! That was a good one.

Eventually, we'll all have to compete in the wizard competition. Whoever wins is the only one who gets to keep their powers.

What happens if you don't win? Are the effects permanent?

If I don't win, I can say goodbye to my powers. For good.
We even had some counselor guy come in and suggest we all come up with 'Plan B's just in case we lose the competition.

I don't understand, though. How does one lose all their powers simply by losing a competition?

[Alex shrugs.]

It's the rule where I'm from. Only one wizard in a family of wizards gets to stay a wizard.

It's why my dad lost his powers.

That's an... odd sort of rule. Why only one?

[She shrugs.]

They don't have any rules like that where you're from, do they?

No, there aren't any rules like that where I come from.

Lucky.

I almost don't even wanna go back.

... But I'm sure you miss your family and friends.

[Alex gives a faint smile.]

Well, I did say almost.

[She smiles back.]

You did. ... I can understand, though.

So, you get to keep your powers forever?
What are you gonna do with 'em?

I suppose I do. But I'm not sure what I want to do just yet; I still have the OWLs and two more years of school after that. There are a variety of options to consider, though.

You mean, like... wizard grad school?

My gosh...

Well, not exactly. Usually everyone goes through school for seven years, but not everyone takes the NEWTs, which are advanced level examinations one would be required to take for certain occupations.

What kind of occupations?

Well, if you want to work in the Ministry of Magic, for one. Or to be a Healer or an Auror. Or a professor at Hogwarts.

So, you don't get to stay in the human world with your magic?

I suppose one could. Some people do. But most choose not to.

I couldn't stay in the wizard world for the rest of my life. I'd miss the human world too much.

Besides, if I were to actually win the wizard competition, God forbid, I'd miss my friends and family too much.

Except Justin. He'd probably be a pain to deal with, especially if he lost the competition to me.
[That last part is only half in jest.]

[This is beginning to sound much different than the wizarding/Muggle world divide she's familiar with...]

... What happens if you win the competition?

I keep my powers, my brothers lose theirs.
Justin holds a grudge against me forever because he's the better wizard. Max... finds something to occupy himself. (He's shockingly good at that.)

But you made it sound as though... you'd never see your friends again if you won.

Yeah, if I was in your world.
I live in the human world. On a regular basis.
