[Hermione has to admit, it's interesting to talk about magic with someone else that's not from her own world. Who knows what she could learn?]

Okay.
[Alex smirks. Not only was she excited to show this girl a spell from back home, but she'd get to show her another spell on the way. She pulls her wand out of her boot and looks toward the PCD again.]

Hey, put your PCD on the floor.

[Hermione just looks into the screen with a confused expression.]

... Why?

'Cause. I'm gonna do a spell.
Just do it!

All right.

[Though still wary, Hermione sets down the PCD.]

[She smiles, reciting a brief incantation.]

Help me travel on my own,
I need to get there through this phone.

[And in a flash, Alex materializes through Hermione's PCD screen, a solidifying manifestation of a hologram. After straightening out her clothes, she holds out a hand.]

Hi, I'm Alex.

[To say that Hermione is shocked would be an understatement. She's never seen a spell quite like that before. There's Apparition, there are Portkeys, sure, but she's never seen someone use magic to teleport through an electronic device. But, seeing the other girl standing there, she regains her composure and shakes her hand.]

I'm Hermione Granger. It's nice to meet you, Alex. [Thoughtful pause] That was... quite a spell, I have to say.

Hermione?

[Keywords! Pfft!]

[After meeting Hermione's eyes with a 'you're kidding me' expression, she gives her a shrug. We all need names, right?]

Yeah, I got it from a book my dad gave me. It actually had something useful in it.

[That wasn't a reaction to her name that Hermione hadn't gotten before. Her eyes say something like, 'no, I'm not kidding, and there's nothing wrong with my name', but she'll drop that. She's a lot more interested in this book and what sorts of spells it might have in it.]

... What book was it?

Uh, Spells for the Modern Wizard, I think. I kind of wish I had it with me. Spell books are sort of the only books I read.

Spells for the Modern Wizard..... I've never heard of that one.

[She'll stop and ponder this for a second. A spell book she's never heard of? Shock and awe. Then she'll shift gears a little as she moves on to a new thought.]

.... Well, spell books are useful, but you should read more than just those. A successful understanding of magic does require a broader knowledge base.

Really? You mean, like, literature and stuff?
I usually just watch the movies.

I meant more of a... theoretical understanding of magic.

Theoretical? What do you mean?
[Clearly, Alex hasn't given the theory of magic much thought.]

It's not all waving your wand and casting spells, you know. There's a considerable amount of knowledge that has to go into it.

[Said in this tone of voice that's basically, "Come on, you should know that." Although, it's not totally surprising, because her best friends are Harry and Ron, who a lot of the time really couldn't care less about theory. So.]

[She nods.]

I think I get it. Like, my dad showed us an example of how to think through your spells before you make them up.

Yeah, my brother turned himself into a sandwich once. 'Nuff said.

I didn't think it was possible to turn oneself into an inanimate object. It takes years of intensive training to even become an Animagus.

Years?
Wow. your magic must be a lot harder than mine.

Oh!
[Lightbulb!]

Why don't you try one of my spells?

To transfigure oneself into something else, yes.

[Then, considering. Well, it couldn't hurt. And besides, she could always master new spells.]

... All right. What should I try?

I know a spell that can turn you into any kind of animal.
Here, try this one:

Animosa Espinosa.

[She swishes her wand, and within seconds, Alex shrinks down into a fuzzy calico cat. But her human voice is still working!]

You give it a try!

[... What. That little display just went beyond any sort of logic of magic Hermione knew from her own world. If she hadn't just seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn't have believed it.]

All right.

[She takes a deep breath and raises her wand, trying her best to imitate the precise swishing motion she just saw Alex make as she casts the spell.]

Animosa Espinosa.

[Alex watched, curious and excited. This had to work. There was no way that these two wizards could have powers so completely different. Worlds apart, even. Granted, it did take Alex a couple shots before she got the spell just right, but something always happened when she tried.]

[And.... nothing. That's right, for the first time in Hermione Granger's life, she tried a spell and nothing happened. The shock quickly wore off and turned into some frustration. How did the other girl do it and she couldn't? What was the secret? She had to find out.]

[Alex, in cat form, looked up at Hermione, just as surprised as she was. Blinking, she spoke the words to another incantation:]

Humanosa Espinosa.

[She grew back to her human form, smoothing her hair back with the back of her hand, much like a cat cleaning her ears. Sometimes the animal mannerisms took a while to wear off.]

That's weird. It didn't work.
